The Montane Adventure Race will test elite teams on a technical course open for 48 hours, as they pass through 3 UNESCO World Heritage sites and battle for a qualifying spot in the 2027 Adventure Racing World Championship.
Sjælland, Denmark — The Adventure Racing World Series (ARWS) is preparing for the 2026 European Championship, which will be contested across the rugged and historic terrain of Sjælland, Denmark from August 27-30th. As the pinnacle of the ARWS European circuit, the Montane Adventure Race will serve as a punishing and prestigious arena where the continent's elite teams must navigate a complex landscape of wild forests, coastline and open water, at the same time passing through centuries of history.
While the physical toll of the race will be immense, the event is uniquely defined as a passage through Danish heritage that transforms a standard competition into an odyssey of discovery.

Showing Sjælland and Denmark to the World
The 2026 Championship marks a sophisticated synergy between world-class sport and Danish national heritage. Supported by Sport Event Denmark and Destination Sjælland, the event leverages the region’s cultural assets to create a race of profound significance. By integrating UNESCO World Heritage sites and historic landmarks into the course, the championship provides a narrative that extends far beyond athletic competition.
“The European Adventure Racing Championship is a great example of how international sporting events can create value far beyond sport itself.” Said Lars Lundov, CEO of Sport Event Denmark.
“The championship connects nature, cultural heritage and local communities across Sjælland and demonstrates how Denmark can use its unique landscapes as an arena for extraordinary experiences.
“At the same time, the event gives us a unique opportunity to showcase Sjælland’s natural and cultural assets to an international audience.”
The involvement of national sporting authorities underscores the event's significance and commitment to local communities. While teams battle the diverse terrain of Sjælland, the global audience will be introduced to the region’s rich history, featuring:
- 3 UNESCO World Heritage sites
- 6 Museums
- Dozens of historical checkpoints integrated into the navigation
The event is anchored by title sponsor Montane, a brand synonymous with the lightweight, breathable gear required for non-stop endurance racing. It is also supported by FB Gruppen A/S to help manage complex logistics and a host of other local and regional partners, venues and sponsors. The race HQ will be hosted at the Kobæk Strand Hotel & Konference centre, which is where all of the teams will be accommodated at the start and finish of the race.

A Masterclass in Event Design
The architect of this ambitious journey is Race Director Lars Bukkehave. With an 18-year pedigree in race organization and ARWS refereeing, and a personal resume of 120 races across 30 countries, Bukkehave is renowned for course designs that are as mentally engaging as they are physically demanding. His reputation for "creative suffering" is legendary; past participants have faced mind-bending challenges like complex mazes and high-intensity "Navy Seal" tests. This history of innovation ensures a route that will surprise even the most seasoned veterans.
The 2026 course is a grueling 19-stage odyssey with a projected winning time of 35–37 hours, though teams are permitted a maximum of 48 hours to cross the finish line. With 11 Transition Areas (TAs) between disciplines punctuating the route, "slick transitions" will be critical for a fast race.
The Sjælland landscape has been transformed into a series of technical challenges designed to continuously surprise and test the teams:
Coastal Challenge: A 4-hour technical coasteering and caving stage will force teams to scramble and swim along the jagged coastline. It is a super-technical discipline where the rule is simple: "Run what you can, climb or swim the rest."
Vertical Tests: Teams will spend an intensive 1.5 hours on ropes, featuring high-altitude rappelling and specialized "Vertical Orienteering." This includes technical tree climbing where points are won far above the forest floor. Petzl are the official ropes and climbing partner and all specialized climbing gear will be provided to teams for the vertical stages.
Aquatic Complexity: The water disciplines are multi-faceted, ranging from a 4-hour open water kayak between islands using a fleet of 100 solo kayaks, to the unique challenge of "canoeing with bikes" on freshwater lakes. Stages 1 and 5 feature open water swims on which teams must utilize masks, snorkels, and waterproof lights to locate submerged checkpoints.
Navigational Necessity: The race has an incredible 147 checkpoints and stages will require careful map and compass navigation to find them. There will be running, mountain biking and paddle orienteering and even the tree climbing stage will have a map. A variety of technical maps will be used, and some historic maps as well.
The full course and race locations will only be revealed to the teams at the race briefing prior to the start. The physical challenges provide the backdrop for a clash between some of the world's most decorated endurance teams.

An Elite Field and Continental Powerhouses
The competitive stakes are high, as the new European Champions will also earn a direct, guaranteed qualifying spot for the 2027 Adventure Racing World Championship in Croatia. This prize has attracted a formidable international field of 50 teams representing 17 nationalities, including athletes from Australia, Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Latvia, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the USA.
The leaderboard is expected to be dominated by the "Baltic Powerhouse," with Estonian teams currently holding the top three European rankings in the field. Estonian Ace /La Sportiva are both the world and European #2 ranked team, while their compatriots Õnnevalem and Metsapeatus are #3 and #6 in Europe.
While the Estonians are the favorites, local Danish contenders like Team Aaros (#25 in the World Rankings) and Masanga Racing have a home-field advantage with their knowledge of the race and the Sjælland terrain.
There is a depth of experience in Danish racing with Team Racing Denmark/High Five, Aaros and Team Nordisk all past winners of ARWS Expedition races, and many strong young racers also coming up through the Danish youth racing programme. Fifteen of the teams on the start line will be Danish, with the Netherlands fielding 9 teams and France and Estonia 5 each.

A World Class Arena for Adventure
The 2026 Championship marks a significant evolution for the Montane Adventure Race, transitioning from its traditional winter slot to a high-summer expedition to accommodate the scale and prestige of the European Championship.
Lars Bukkehave, Race Director of the Montane Adventure Race, stated: "Moving to a summer edition allows us to fully exploit the complexity of Sjælland's waterways and its surprisingly demanding terrain. We have designed a course that forces teams to constantly adapt; in adventure racing, you might start with Plan A, but by the midpoint, the successful teams are the ones who can execute Plan E under pressure.
“My goal is to showcase the incredible historical depth of Denmark—from UNESCO sites to hidden museums—while delivering a physical test that stays true to our 'no nonsense' reputation. As past champion Silver Eansaar noted, this race will break stereotypical ideas about Denmark being flat and open. With 72 volunteers ready to facilitate this journey, we are prepared to show the world that Sjælland is a world-class arena for adventure."
