Teams of 3 or 4 men and women will race for up to 30 hours non-stop. Navigating with only map and compass, they’ll travel by foot, mountain bike and canoe over 130 kms through rugged Canadian Shield backcountry.
Hosted out of YMCA Camp Pine Crest, the Wilderness Traverse racecourse will be revealed on Saturday at 7 a.m. when teams will receive their maps and instructions. At 10 a.m., the race is on, a non-stop 20 to 30 hour mountain biking, trekking and paddling journey, visiting a series of checkpoints on an unmarked course to reach the finish line.
Event director Bob Miller, an experienced adventure racer for 25+ years, launched Wilderness Traverse in 2010 when friends “suggested” he create an adventure race that showcases Ontario’s amazing wilderness. Since then, Wilderness Traverse has raced each year in locations across Ontario’s cottage country, from Haliburton to Parry Sound, with top teams competing for the coveted “Bob the Beaver” trophy.
In adventure racing, physical strength and fitness are important but are not the only determining factors for success. Teamwork, navigation, humility and mental toughness all play a role – and a good selection of junk food also helps!
Teams carry GPS trackers, but not for navigation! Locations and routes are tracked for safety and for spectators. Anyone interested can follow the real-time progress of teams and see the race maps online at the Live Coverage website starting 10 am Saturday. Teams will cross the finish line anytime from early Sunday morning until 4 p.m.

Adventure racing is global. New for 2024, Wilderness Traverse is proud to be a part of the Adventure Racing World Series (www.arworldseries.com) North America series.
Race coverage will be shared via social media to a larger, global audience, teams will score points towards their international rankings, and have the opportunity to compete in the annual North America and World Championships. The 2024 Adventure Racing World Championship takes place in Ecuador in November 2024 and the 2025 championship is coming to Canada, with Expedition Canada hosting in September 2025. We’re proud that many racers who got their start at Wilderness Traverse have gone on to compete at the highest AR World Series level.
Our charity partner is Outward Bound Canada, who share our belief in the power of outdoor adventure to empower youth. We encourage our followers to consider supporting the fundraising efforts of The Breakfast Club, longtime Wilderness Traverse competitors.
