Neck and Neck after 2 days in Colombia

ARWS_Huairasinchi_2016_1

At the mid point of this years ARWS Qualifier in Colombia only minutes separate the top two teams, Bosi Adventure from Colombia and Fairis from Ecuador, and it looks to be a sprint finish in the making.

Starting in San Cipriano Bosi Adventure (Gabriel Castaño, Eliana Fernanda Chica Vasquez, Richar Efren Diaz Jimenez and David Muñoz) hit the front early and held a slim lead over the field through the first two paddle legs including 11km of tubing and 43km of kayaking down the Dagua River to the Buenaventura Bay on the pacific coast.  Team Fairis (Bernardo Vintimilla,  Jorge Brito, Yeimy Liliana Cadena Bermúdez and Urtzi Iglesias) caught Bosi on the first mountain biking section of 67km up into the Andean foothills to El Queremal and the two teams have remained in tight competition through the subsequent 20km trek, 55km mountain bike and 55km trek and roping.

Disappointingly for the highest ranked Ecuadorian team in the ARWS, Ecuador Movistar, their race ended on the second day with mountain bike mechanical problems.

This year the Huairasinchi Adventure Race moved across the border to host the event in Colombia after running in Ecuador for the last 13 years.  Ecuador and Colombia are closely situated with the Pacific forest, the location of most of the adventure racing in the region, spanning the border between both countries. Due to this close proximity the adventure racing athletes from both countries regularly compete with and against each other.

Surprise performers at the mid point are team Papacara (currently ranked outside the top 100 in the world) holding onto fourth position.  Their experience may be coming to the fore having competed in the Huairasinchi for many years and after team Ecuador Movistar they were the next highest placed team from the host country of the AR World Championship 2014 finishing in 18th place.

Ahead of teams still to come is 15km kayaking, 17km trekking, 15km kayaking and 59km mountain biking.
